The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay

By Michael Chabon

0312282990

Sammy Clayman is a fast-talking, pipsqueak son of Jewish immigrants scratching out a living in Depression-era New York City. Josef Kavalier is the son of the Czech intelligensia with a taste for escape artistry and prestidigitation. After escaping to NYC from Nazi-infested Prague, Josef moves in with his cousins the Claymans.

Immediately, Sam and Joe form a partnership in which they build their own unique version of the American dream. A dream tempered by the trials of war, love, loss, hope, and bitter disappointment. And in the pages of the comic books that they create, they provide an escape from the trauma of the world while simultaneously nurturing the dreams of a broken generation of Americans.
