Danger: Falling Book Zone

RURD RURD RURD RURD RURD RURD

I finished reading Quicksilver a while back so it's about time I posted something in this space, even though I've been dilly-dallying over what to read next. Not really sure of my mood, I've started several books, but haven't settled on one or the other.

In addition, I have another pile looming over me that I plan to read this year. Somewhere into this teetering stack, I need to insert books I received for Christmas, not to mention the second two volumes of the Baroque Cycle that I'm waiting to buy in paperback or remaindered hardcover (better put those at the bottom). It's starting to become a game of reverse-Jenga or some bizarre form of real-world, literary Tetris.

All this whinging doesn't even take into account the half-dozen or so books (I hope it's only that many) that I've all but given up on finishing, the grandaddy of which is The Tunnel (so far, 3 aborted attempts to get past page 50).

So but anyway, here's a quick summary (in no particular order):

Started, but not finished:
Rising Up, Rising Down (will probably finish sometime in mid-2010)
McSweeney's Quarterly Concern #13
The Dog's Mind
Life of Pi
The Making of Modern Japan
The 9/11 Commission Report
Waiting to be read:
Middlesex
McSweeney's Quarterly Concern #14
(I'm sure #15 will be coming along any day now)
Thirst
Libra
America (The Book)
Ansel Adams', The Print
Ansel Adams', The Negative
Global Covenant
All the Pretty Horses
Plainsong
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
*Sigh* Maybe I should just strike New Year's Resolution #317 (read 1-2 books/month) from my list right now and move on to New Year's Resolution #318: "No more candy from the candy machine at work."

Oh wait...rats!

Don't know how your reading is going in 2005, but replace All the Pretty Horses on the waiting list with Blood Meridian. It's a slow read (I reread a few chapters the first time through), but really worth it. So uplifting. And Doug loved it too. It'll be the "Donnie Brasco" of our 30's. Although I think a lot of others read Meridian. We had little company with Brasco.
