Brad Mehldau - The Art Of The Trio, Vol. 3
So I couldn't decide which one to get, alright? Volumes 1 and 3 are studio recordings, while Volume 2 is a live set recorded at the Village Vanguard. Hailed as the cream of the next generation's crop of jazz pianists, Mehldau has also released Volumes 4 & 5 of this series (but maybe I'll put those purchases off until next Christmas).
Medeski, Martin, & Wood - Tonic
MMW's "jazziest" release was recorded live at the NYC club Tonic and showcases the group in an "unplugged" format, although the absence of electrification doesn't slow them down one bit.
The Breeders - Last Splash
B'dum-dum-de-dum.
B'dum-dum-de-dum.
B'dum-dum-de-dum (buh-dum-dum-dum),
B'dum-dum-de-dum (buh-dum-dum-dum)...
Bweeowowr (bweeowowr) Bweeowowr (bweeowowr)...
Tori Amos - Boys for Pele
So how many pop/rock artists do you know that use the harpsichord?

Tonic is good, but the Mehldau Vol. 2 is the best of the list, by my lights. His technique isn't that impressive, but his sense of ensemble and architecture is tremendous. And occasionally he just reminds me how stifled and non-improvised some live jazz actually is.
