Mingus (and MMW)

Charles Mingus - Ah Um
Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots
Charles Mingus - Pithecanthropus Erectus
I was feeling in a Mingus mood, so I slipped these cds into the changer. Ah Um is probably the most accessible introduction to Mingus, plus it contains a tune called "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," one of the best song names ever. The title track of Pithecanthropus Erectus is probably my favorite tune in the bunch. It represents Mingus' interpretation of the evolution of man and is divided into four movements: evolution, superiority-complex, decline and destruction. From this, one might be able to deduce that Mingus' view of the human race was not a rosy one.
