Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition, the latest from science fiction legend William Gibson, follows the adventures of Cayce Pollard, a marketing and advertising consultant with a hyper-sensitivity (actually a literal allergy) to certain over-hyped brands. Cayce becomes drawn into various intertwining plots to discover the source of a series of anonymous internet movie clips. We follow her as she negotiates shifting loyalties and relationships across several time zones in her struggle to find the maker of the video clips, also know as "the Footage" by the obssesive Internet following--which obsession Cayce happens to share.

But what's that? The Internet? Gibson couldn't think of anything more "sci-fi" and futuristic than that? Actually, this is the first of Gibson's novels that is not set in the future. Gibson proves that he can negotiate the contemporary lanscape as easily as he can the speculative cyber-terrain he pioneered in 1984 with Neuromancer.
