More Minimalism

John Adams - Violin Concerto/Shaker Loops
I used to wonder why John Adams is considered to be a minimalistic composer. Now I know why. Originally written in 1977, "The Shaker Loops" shows a strong minimalist influence with its pulsing rhythm and insistent pace. The more recent Violin Concerto (1993) displays how Adams has both outgrown and expanded on the minimalist label.
John Adams- Nixon in China
A powerful opera about the meeting of two powerful world leaders. A modern classic.
Terry Riley - In C
This recording deserves a more careful listen than I have been able to give it so far. The music follows intricate twists and turns, doubling back on itself contnuously.
Gyorgy Ligeti - Le Grand Macabre
This is one truly bizzare opera. I need to sit with the libretto and listen to it straight through. Even though it is performed in English, many parts are almost screeched or shouted so that it is hard to make out the words.
Brian Eno - Music For Airports
The pinnacle of ambient music.
Frank Zappa - Strictly Commercial
A "best of" collection from the ultimate rock iconoclast.
