My First Jazz CD

Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come
This is the first jazz cd I ever purchased on the advice of my college roomate, composer, and jazz musician John Sneider. This was a great introduction to jazz and to Miles. It may not be his best or most popular cd, but it's worth the price of purchase for Miles' beautiful muted horn on 'Old Folks' alone.
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil
One of my more recent jazz purchases, this cd includes some great Wayne Shorter compositions, including 'Dance Cadaverous'. Not to mention the great band that includes Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones.
John Coltrane - Love Supreme
John Coltrane offers his praise and thanks to God in this moving and timeless suite of four tracks. Truly a masterpiece.
Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea - Play
About 10 years ago, I heard this version of 'Autumn Leaves' on WJZR on my way home from the second shift in the wee hours of the morning. This song, which starts off as a parody of Las Vegas lounge singers, left me in awe by the end of the track. I bought the cd the next day.
Frank Zappa - Zappa Picks - By Jon Fishman of Phish
I don't own any other Frank Zappa cds...yet. This is a good introduction to his vast catalogue and was probably intended by the record company to be an entry point for the curious listeners (like me).
California Guitar Trio - Rocks the West
I've said it before: if these guys are ever playing near you, you must get out to see them. Their playing is simply amazing. This live album captures the gamut, from Beethoven's 'Symphony No. 9' to the surf guitar of 'Miserlou' to Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to Duke Ellington's 'Caravan,' plus, some terrific originals such as 'Pathways' and 'Scramble.'
