Fire Update

I haven't heard from Krista yet today, but if I can trust this map I pulled from the San Diego NBC affiliate this AM, then all should be relatively ok since Krista and Eric live in La Mesa. Krista sent a couple other pictures yesterday of the ash cover on their pool and car.

Further Update:
I just heard from Krista. Seems the wind has turned and is now pushing the fire away from the city. Everything is closed and the air is still bad, but at least they are out of harm's way for now.

California Fires

The fires in San Diego county are threatening the home of our friends Krista and Eric. Krista writes to me in an email:

the biggest fire is in san bernardino, but there's 4 more in san diego county. they think the fires are going to merge today. the sky is orange. it's like the apocalypse here. it smells like bbq without the meat.

The Weather Channel forecast for San Diego calls for "Smoke" today. Until Eric & Krista get the order to evacuate, they are staying in their house and watching the news on tv. Considering the view from their front porch at 10AM (the pinkish dot is the Sun), I don't blame them.

Recipe Tips for the Holidays

Enjoy the culinary creations from Weight Watchers circa 1974. The recipes don't seem especially healthy or low-fat, just...well, disgusting.

Yeah, I know tastes were different 30 years ago. Also, we didn't have Wegmans around to keep us up-to-date on the hippest new food fads, but I mean really, Fluffy Mackerel Pudding ?!? Plus, "Mexican food" enclosed in quotation marks can't be a good thing...

Everything and More

For those math geeks out there (Hi Matt!), there is a new book, just about to be released by W.W.Norton and written by David Foster Wallace (my favorite author). Everything and More: A Compact History of ∞ presents for the lay reader the accomplishments of mathemetician Georg Cantor, who integrated the concept of infinity into modern mathematics and invented the field of set theory along the way.

If you're the kind of person who cares what the critics think, there are some favorable reviews out there along with some not quite favorable reviews. You should be able to tell from the title if the book is for you, but if you're unconvinced, listen to DFW's interview with NPR's Talk of the Nation. Doesn't he just sound like a nice guy? Wouldn't you want to read his book?

Layout Changes

I've decided that I'm going to rearrange some things on the site, so please bear with me for a couple of days. Some of the pages may display a little wicky-wacky, but I'll have it fixed soon.

Feelin' Lucky

In a fit of narcissistic self-promotion, I'm happy to report that a google search for ken smoker will now list this site as the first entry. This works for kari smoker as well, a fact that I'm sure will make her uneasy and slightly paranoid.

A search for buddy smoker or linus smoker will list this site on the first page, while sam smoker shows up on page 3 and tang smoker makes page 6. (Poor Tang!)

I might not be so excited about this if it weren't for the fact that we knocked the pot smoker of the month link from the #1 spot.
