Can't Look Away...
Kari woke up this morning (shocked, shocked!) to find me sitting on the living room couch watching Casablanca for like the gazillionth time. There are just some movies that, when I stumble across them while flipping through the channels, I have to stop and watch. Here's the short list of others:
- The Godfather I & II
- Patton
- Tora! Tora! Tora!
- Rio Bravo (also Rio Lobo, they're basically the same movie)1
- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
- The Day of the Jackal
- Dr. Strangelove
There are more than these, this list just represents the movies that annoy Kari the most. In fact, she can instantly identify the first three items on the list even when she's not in the room. This despite having never watched more than ten minute's worth at any one time.
I can't say that these are my favorite films, I just feel compelled to watch, even though they cost me major points every time...
I remember way back when Movieline was still a cool magazine, they used to ask three movie people this very question every month.
For me, the major one is The Lady Eve, but there are also many featuring Adam Sandler.
Posted by: Hillary at October 10, 2005 11:06 AMI'm with you on the Godfather movies I&II. In fact, I'm watching them again with Vivi right now because she's never seen them. Of your other movies, I've only seen Patton and Strangelove, and, well, let's just say I've never seen a Kubrick film I could stomach.
I'm tellin' ya, Kari only needs to hear a couple of notes from the Godfather soundtrack and she starts groaning.
Kubrick can be an acquired taste, I'll admit. I can't see myself being getting sucked into watching 2001, for example. But not even The Shining, Mike? The feel-good movie of the year?
Posted by: ken at October 10, 2005 01:36 PMOh, and I'm almost with you, Hill, on the Adam Sandler movies, but for me they only rate as A Movie That I Will Flip To During The Commercials Of That Other Movie I'm Watching.
Posted by: ken at October 10, 2005 01:43 PMKen, you magnificent bastard! When you look into the pile of goo that used to be your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Dah-na-na-dah-na-na
Posted by: Not Will, or Dick Van at October 10, 2005 10:01 PMNo, not even The Shining. I'm with Stephen King's opinion on that one (ie, the book is about a normal guy who goes crazy, and the movie is about a crazy guy who completely batsh*t insane).
Speaking of horror movies, though, Alien counts for me as a movie I can't turn off easily. And for comedies you might not expect people to love that much, I also get stuck on Groundhog Day :-)
