It's Sounding Very Mid-rangey
I made last minute plans to see the California Guitar Trio last night with Seth at the Montage Grill. After waiting 30 minutes for a seat (after we bought tickets!), then enduring what must have been a 45 minute delay because of sound system problems, not to mention the noise from the bar and health club next door, we were treated to one awesome show. If CGT is ever in your area, you need to check them out.
You're not likely to ever hear musicianship of this caliber in musical styles as wide-ranging as what you'll hear in a typical CGT concert. Last nigt we heard Beethoven's Ode to Joy (the fingering was amazing!) followed by some rocking surf guitar. They also took "Ghost Riders in the Sky," slid into "Riders of the Storm," then combined the two. There was a Bach piece (a partita, I think) where each guitarist played every third note, some hillbilly blues and a piece based on the melody of an ancient Japanese folk song. For their encore, they played Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Plus, (plus!) all of their original music was spectacular as well.
It was great how it turned out, especially after the band came out and played a song, realized the sound system wasn't right (the bass was totally missing from one of the speakers) then had to wait so long for the system to be set up again. Big thumbs up for the band, big thumbs down for the Montage Grill.
